****new release list no.186

THIS FRIDAY, Oct 3rd: come watch the classic 80’s film BACK TO THE FUTURE starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Crispin Glover at 8pm in our backyard screening patio. This is another great one for a family date! Doors open at 7:45pm. Soda/Candy $1. Suggested donation $5. Popcorn is free!

IRON MAN starring Robert Downey Jr. is here! This superfun romp is really quite awesome. I think the winter blockbuster season is officially kicked off. Jason Segel is Peter Bretter, a loserish soundtrack composer on a crime television series who is trying to get over his breakup with the show’s star, Sarah Marshall in FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL. This is another Judd Apatow production and I think there is something deep about this team. They make goofy little comedies (KNOCKED UP, SUPERBAD, 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN), but they seem to have an agenda that they are slowly pushing a bit more each film. This one was written by the star, Segel, and it made me laugh a bunch.

Also out this week is BEAUFORT, which was another Oscar-nominated foreign-language film in 2007. There are bunches of other good looking foreign films (FAR NORTH, THE GOOD BOY, I DREAMT UNDER WATER, JELLYFISH, KENNY) as well as some important documentaries (TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE, BIGGER STRONGER FASTER) this week. And lots of new additions, Blu-ray and otherwise. Thanks to David W. who brought six films to our attention recently, three of which are new additions this week (ROUND MIDNIGHT, EL ULTIMO TREN, A PLACE IN THE WORLD).

Some of you may know that last month Valentina Picasso of the restaurant Valentina’s on Cortland Avenue was suddenly stricken with serious illness. There will be a fundraiser at the restaurant for her on October 19th between 2 and 6pm. There is information about it here. http://www.valentinaristorantesf.com/community.php

Best,
Ken

............//NEW RELEASES//............

AKI KAURISMAKI’S PROLETARIAT TRILOGY.
THE MATCH FACTORY GIRL, SHADOWS IN PARADISE and ARIEL.
Drama/Comedy/Foreign (Finnish).
Directed by Aki Kaurismaki.
* These three films from 1986-1990 are depressingly sad comedies about hard living, lawlessness and the whimsical forces of fate.

AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON.
Drama/Criterion/Foreign (Japanese).
Chishu Ryu.
Directed by Yasujiro Ozu.
* Another Ozu Criterion release, this one follows a widower who arranges a marriage for his 24 year old daughter.

BEAUFORT.
Action/Drama/War/Foreign (Hebrew).
Oshri Cohen.
Directed by Joseph Cedar.
* Nominated for the 2007 Best Foreign Film award (which went to THE COUNTERFEITERS) this film is about an Israeli soldier in a troop stationed in Lebanon in 2000. It is a film about retreat and safety and the futility of war.

FAR NORTH.
Drama.
Michelle Yeoh/Michelle Krusiec/Sean Bean.
Directed by Asif Kapadia.
* Character study about two outcast women living in the, uh, ahem, far north whose existence is thrown into turmoil by the arrival of a soldier.

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL.****ALSO IN BLU-RAY****
Comedy.
Jason Segel/Kristen Bell/Mila Kunis/Bill Hader/Jonah Hill/Russell Brand.
Directed by Nick Stoller.
* From the Apatow gang comes this comedy that I keep wanting to call FORGETTING SARAH SILVERMAN. Why? I don’t know. Oh, well, that’s neither what it’s called nor what it’s about. It is about a guy named Peter (Segel) who is still a little boy regardless of the fact that he has grown up. It takes the loss of his hottie actress girlfriend (Bell) to alert him to his emotional immaturity and as part of the healing process he takes a Hawaiian vacation. Unfortunately, Sarah is taking a Hawaiian vacation with her new rock star boyfriend (Brand, in a show-stealing performance) to the same resort.

THE GOOD BOY.
Drama/Foreign (Spanish).
Alex Gonzalez/Dario Grandinetti.
Directed by Daniel Cebrian.
* Indie film that won some awards on the circuit about a young boxer whose life is a shambles and is trying to resist the temptation to turn to crime.

I DREAMT UNDER THE WATER.
Drama/LGBT/Foreign (French).
Hubert Benhamdine/Caroline Ducey.
Directed by Hormoz.
* I can not find much info about this film from France, but the director originally made it as a short in 2005 and just finished it as a feature, so kudos to him, right?

IRON MAN.****ALSO IN BLU-RAY****
Comic Book/Adventure/Sci-Fi.
Robert Downey Jr./Gwyneth Paltrow/Jeff Bridges/Terrence Howard.
Directed by Jon Favreau.
* It just seems like Robert Downey Jr. is entering his Godfather period. Much like Bill Murray, he is settling into himself and that is being heavily reflected in his films. IRON MAN is one of the better Comic book movies ever made. It is about Tony Stark an arms dealer (and genius engineer) who, after sustaining bad wounds in an abduction by terrorists who want him to build them a missile, builds a suit of armor to escape their clutches. The story is relatively simple and the characters are familiar; there is the misguided employee, the cute secretary, and varying government stooges. However, the film is held together by the extreme cool of Mr. Stark as portrayed by the seemingly extremely cool Robert Downey Jr. And on top of all that, Black Sabbath’s raucously over the top tune Iron Man is brilliantly utilized. How bout that?

JELLYFISH.
Drama/Foreign (Hebrew).
Sarah Adler/Nikol Leidman/Gera Sandler.
Directed by Shira Geffen and Etgar Keret.
* Lovely film about three women and life’s gentle sways that cause their trials and tribulations.

KENNY.
Comedy/Mockumentary/Foreign (Australia).
Shane Jacobsen/Jesse Jacobsen/Ronald Jacobsen.
Directed by Clayton Jacobsen.
* He’s the porta-potty guy. Seriously. No matter how much of a struggle life is, he shows up and deals with the portable toilets of the world. Kenny rocks.

LEWIS BLACK’S ROOT OF ALL EVIL.
Comedy/Stand-up.

REST STOP: DON’T LOOK BACK.
Horror.
Diane Salinger/Gary Entin/Richard Tillman.
Directed by Shawn Papazian.

............//DOCUMENTARY//............

BIGGER STRONGER FASTER.
Documentary.
Directed by Christopher Bell.
* Informative and entertaining education about steroid use in our society. Director Bell follows his two brothers deeply into the world of steroid enhanced body building.

CSNY: DEJA VU.
Rock-Doc.
Directed by Neil Young.

TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE.
Documentary.
Directed by Alex Gibney.
* Doc exploring the policies of the US military in relation to the Afghanistan (and Iraq) conflicts focusing on a young taxi driver that was tortured and killed in captivity.

WHEN WE LEFT EARTH.****ALSO IN BLU-RAY****
Nature Doc.
Narrated by Gary Sinise.
* Visual and intellectual view of the US Space program.

............//TELEVISION//............

CLICK & CLACKS: AS THE WRENCH TURNS.
Television/Comedy.
Ray Magliozzi/Tom Magliozzi.
*Animated version of the awesome talk-radio show featuring Ray and Tom, two rascally Bostonians giving auto repair advice and sharing these hysterical sense of humor.

EDWARD THE KING.
Biopic.
Annette Crosbie/Timothy West.
* 1975 Emmy-winning television mini-series.

............//FAMILY//............

HARRY THE DIRTY DOG: AND MORE PLAYFUL PUPPY STORIES.
* Six doggy tales.

SESAME STREET: ABBY IN WONDERLAND.

............// NEW ADDITIONS//............

A PLACE IN THE WORLD.
* Very highly regarded Argentinean film about a family living in voluntary exile from Buenos Aires in a remote valley whose peaceful existence is threatened by the possibility of a hydro-electric dam that would render the valley uninhabitable.

****new release list no.185

This Friday, Sept 26th, come see E.T. in our outdoor screening room. Drag your kids on a family date and sit in the lovely outside while watching the film that launched Drew Barrymore’s career. Doors open at 7:45. Movies starts at 8pm. Suggested donation $5. Candy/Soda $1. Popcorn is free. Occasionally we cancel due to inclement weather, so give us a buzz if it is looking grey and wet out.

The charming ladies of SEX AND THE CITY make a reappearance on your small screen in this big-screen adaptation of the successful television series. You can bet there will be a lot of issues, resolved and unresolved as the girls (women?) continue their quests to figure it out. In RUN FATBOY RUN, Simon Pegg is not fat, but he does run. And run he must if wants to re-earn the love of his son’s mom, who he left at the altar five years earlier. LEATHERHEADS is George Clooney’s latest vanity project about a 1920’s era football team who really should wear helmets. In DECEPTION, Ewan McGregor hooks it up with many random ladies. Movie Star! From Iran comes A FEW KILOS OF DATES FOR A FUNERAL, which is a lovely exploration of loneliness and humanity.

THIS AMERICAN LIFE arrives as well, as Ira Glass makes the successful transition from radio star to television star. Did you know he’s Philip Glass’s cousin? Now you do.

There is another nice stack of Blu-Ray titles in this week. Scan down to check them out. In other news, don’t read polls and keep passing open windows.

Love and kisses,
Ken
............//NEW TITLES//............

DECEPTION.
Drama/Romance/Thriller.
Hugh Jackman/Ewan McGregor/Michelle Williams.
Directed by Marcel Langenegger.
* A very deceptive tale of deception involving deceivers who, after first deceiving deceptors are eventually deceived by said deceptors. Also involved is some interesting sounding casual sex scheme. (I have a sneaking suspicion that deceptor is not a word.)

A FEW KILOS OF DATES FOR A FUNERAL.
Drama/Comedy/Foreign (Parsee).
Mohsen Tanabandeh/Nader Fallah.
Directed by Saman Salur.
* Wonderful tale of two men working at a gas station outside of some unnamed city in Iran. In their own way, they are both pursuing love interests that fate is depriving them of.

THE FOOT FIST WAY.
Comedy/Both Martial and Marital Arts.
Danny R. McBride/Ben Best/Mary Jane Bostic.

SEX AND THE CITY: THE MOVIE.
Comedy/Romance.
Sarah Jessica Parker/Kristin Davis/Kim Cattrall/Cynthia Nixon/Jennifer Hudson.
Directed by Michael Patrick King.
* The uber popular tv show about posse of independent women living and loving in New York City makes its way to the big screen! Judging by the popularity of the tv show, this movie will be much loved. I think I heard Shila say she’s already seen it three times!

* In 1972, right here in San Francisco, a group of filmmakers formed Cine Manifest, a Marxist film collective existing to make Independent films of political import that would have a broad appeal. They successfully made two films at great cost, and now, 35 years later they are getting together to examine their successes and failures.

Documentary/Action.
Directed by Abigail Child.
* The story of four African-American men living in Cleveland, Ohio and their trials and tribulations relating to coming out as homosexuals.

MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLING.

****new release list no.184

THIS FRIDAY, SEPT 19th: come watch the classic 70’s film CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND starring Richard Dreyfuss and Teri Garr at 8pm in our backyard screening patio. Doors open at 7:45pm. Soda/Candy $1. Suggested donation $5. Popcorn is free!

In SPEED RACER, Emile Hirsch plays the title role in this adaptation of the cult animation classic. I wonder when they will make a feature of MARINE BOY. I loved that show… Al Pacino plays a forensic psychiatrist trying to avoid his own murder in less than ninety minutes, in fact in 88 MINUTES. Mike Myers is THE LOVE GURU in another goofy comedy written by him. Also notable this week is Tim Robbins in NOISE, Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale in SNOW ANGELS, Matthew Broderick as an addict in denial in FINDING AMANDA and some kooky indie flick about a guy who takes a job as a giant blue corporate mascot in KABLUEY. Also, you musn’t miss Diane Lane and a 15-year-old Laura Dern in LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: THE FABULOUS STAINS.

There is also a trio of Criterion releases directed by Max Ophuls (EARRING OF MADAME DE, LE PLAISIR, LA RONDE), as well as some long awaited documentaries (YOUNG @ HEART and GET THRASHED).

I also have a big bunch of new Blu-ray titles, scan down to check them out. If you are unsure what the heck this whole Blu-ray thing is about, please email me and I will tell you what I know…

Ken

EARRINGS OF MADAME DE.
Drama/Criterion/Foreign (French).
Charles Boyer/Danielle Darrieux.
Directed by Max Ophuls.
* The first of three Criterion releases by Ophuls, this one is about a wealthy couple in Paris and the trials their marriage is taken on by the sale and subsequent multiple purchases of a pair of earrings given to the Madame by her General husband. Deceit, adultery and betrayal are all on full display in this 1953 film.

88 MINUTES.
Al Pacino/Alicia Witt/Leelee Sobieski.

* Dude (Pacino)’s a forensic psychiatrist and he’s got 88 minutes to solve his own murder. Or at least so says the mysterious killer on the line. Will he save himself? Will you watch this movie?

FINDING AMANDA.
Comedy/Drama.
Matthew Broderick/Brittany Snow.
Directed by Peter Tolan.
* Dark comedy about a messed up TV producer (Broderick) going to Vegas to help out his hooker niece (Snow, acted superbly) who her family thinks is in need of a nice rehab visit. Hey who isn’t?

FRANK CALIENDO: ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Stand-up Comedy.
* Dude is funny. He does a great John Madden and a pretty awesome George Bush, too.

KABLUEY.
Comedy.
Scott Prendergast/Lisa Kudrow/Teri Garr.
Directed by Scott Prendergast.
* Salman (Pendergast) a kind of inept putz, takes a job as a giant blue corporate mascot to help his brother’s family while he is off fighting in Iraq.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THE FABULOUS STAINS.
Comedy/Drama/Music.
Diane Lane/Ray Winstone/Laura Dern.
Directed by Lou Adler.
* This is one of those cult favorites that never made it to DVD. It is about a teenage girl who delves deeply into her band, The Fabulous Stains, to help her deal with the death of her mother. The band totally blows up giving her many new problems to deal with.

LA RONDE.
Drama/Criterion/Foreign (French).
Anton Walbrook/Simone Signoret.
Directed by Max Ophuls.
* The second Ophuls film to receive the Criterion treatment this week, this one is a drama about multiple affairs occurring in Vienna around the turn of the last century.

LE PLAISIR.
Comedy/DramaRomance/Criterion/Foreign (French).
Claude Dauphin/Gaby Morlay.
Directed by Max Ophuls.
* The third Criterion Ophuls film, this one has three tales it tells of youth, purity and death, with a good measure of earthly pleasure thrown in.

THE LOVE GURU.
Comedy.
Jessica Alba/Mike Myers/Justin Timberlake.
Directed by Marco Schnabel.
* Written by and starring Mike Myers, he plays an expatriate who is coming back to the states to bust into the self-help industry. Believe me when I tell you that the fact Justin Timberlake is in this movie almost alone will make it worth watching. Seriously! Timberlake is a good actor, and may become a great actor someday.

MADE OF HONOR.
Romance.
Patrick Dempsey/Michelle Monaghan.
Directed by Paul Weiland.
* Like, he’s her “Maid of Honor”, but he’s “Made” of honor. Get it? Do you get it? He’s her friend, and she’s asked him to be her “Maid of Honor” for some gender bending reason. But he, like, loves her. But he’s honorable. He’s freaking “made” of honor. Should I spell it out some more? So, she and he, they’ve been friends, for years, exceptin he’s hot for her and…

NOISE.
Comedy/Drama.
Tim Robbins/Bridget Moynahan/William Hurt.
Directed by Henry Bean.
* A film in the tradition of FALLING DOWN, Robbins plays David Owens, a man in NYC who is being driven absolutely crazy by the noise. The character is based on the director’s real life. He used to break into cars to deactivate their alarms, and was eventually caught and jailed for it! Activism!

RISKY BUSINESS: DELUXE EDITION.
Comedy.
Tom Cruise/Rebecca De Mornay/Bronson Pinchot/Joe Pantoliano/Curtis Armstrong.
Directed by Paul Brickman.
* The 1983 movie that brought Tom Cruise into superstardom! I am sure you know the story. This is a newly released deluxe edition. Did you know that TANGERINE DREAM, the psychedelic rock band did the soundtrack?

SNOW ANGELS.
Drama.
Kate Beckinsale/Sam Rockwell/Griffin Dunne/Amy Sedaris/Olivia Thirlby.
Directed by David Gordon Green.
* Well-received indie film about love and pain and disintegration.

SPEED RACER.
Action/Family/Adventure/Nostalgia/.
Emile Hirsch/Nicholas Elia/Christina Ricci/John Goodman/Susan Sarandon/.
Directed by Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski.
* This revamped take on the animated classic is done in truly wild style. It is a version of the philosophy which brought us WHO KILLED ROGER RABBIT? In that feature, animation characters and live humans interacted. In this, the characters are all (I think) live humans, but the background, the sets and the landscapes are fantastical animations full of color and splendor. It is a visual masterpiece, so even if the story is weak (and it does appear to be very, very FAMILY oriented), it is still worth seeing.

WOMAN TIMES SEVEN.
Comedy/Drama.
Shirley MacLaine/Peter Sellers/.
Directed by Vittorio De Sica.
* From the director of THE BICYCLE THIEF comes this exploration of adultery from 1967.

LYNCH (ONE).
Documentary.
* A look into the mind of the man who brought us ERASERHEAD, BLUE VELVET, WILD AT HEART and many more really tweaked out films.

Documentary.
* This look at the largest primate rescue project in the world is located in Borneo. This is a fascinating look into the lives of Orangutans as they redevelop their society.

YOUNG @ HEART.
Music Documentary.
Directed Stephen Walker.
* The very heartwarming story of a choir out of Massachusetts whose average age is 81 and who sing a wide variety of contemporary and oldies tunes including such diverse artists as James Brown and Sonic Youth.

Animation/Television.

PUSHING DAISIES: COMPLETE 1st SEASON.
Television/Drama/Comedy/Fantasy.
Lee Pace/Anna Friel/Swoosie Kurtz.
Created by Bryan Fuller.
* This quirky show is about a guy named Ned (Pace) who has the interesting power of bringing people back to life from the dead. Unfortunately, if they stick around for more than one minute, someone else has to die. Ned helps a PI solve cases, and runs a pie shop, made ever-convenient by the fact he can make rotten fruit fresh again (of course, when he does this, somewhere a blackberry must die).

TORCHWOOD: COMPLETE 2nd SEASON.
Television/Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE.
* Did, like, every tough actor in the 70’s make a movie with a monkey? This is Clint Eastwood’s turn, and to be fair, it is actually an orangutan. Maybe this would be a great companion piece with ORANGUTAN ISLAND?

JERRY MAGUIRE.
* Tom Cruise, as the money grabbing sports agent.

KING OF NEW YORK.
* Intense Christopher Walken film also starring Laurence Fishburne and what the hell, Wesley Snipes, too.

What do EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE, KING OF NEW YORK, BASIC INSTINCT, RESEVOIR DOGS, DIRTY DANCING, RISKY BUSINESS, SPEED RACER, and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL all having common? They are among the 45+ titles that I have ordered in the last five days on Blu-ray, the hi-def format that I am LOVING these days since I bought the player and a new TV for the store. WOW! If you are renting these things, and you know of titles available that I haven’t bought and you wish I would, please let me know!

Elitist Tina Fey (psyche, little political humor here) hires a working class woman to bear her a child after she discovers her own infertility in BABY MAMA. Then the little Juno moves in with her! Ah, shit baby. Family values are in full display in this lovable little comedy that redraws the district lines of family.

Also new this week is about a brazillion new kids movies, including four new BARBIE flicks guaranteed to make your daughter lose her mind. Also, the first batch of Halloween movies has arrived as well.

Oh, speaking of Halloween. We have decided to culminate our fall schedule of outdoor screenings with a double feature on Halloween. At 7pm, we will show CHARLIE BROWN: IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN. Kids are encouraged to come in their costumes, and we will have much big fun! Later that night we will show a scary flick for the adults, and we are taking your advice to decide what to show. ****new release list no.182

THIS FRIDAY, SEPT 5th: come see HEATHERS in our backyard screening patio. Iconic for so many reasons, and starring a young Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, this film shows you just how many ways things can go wrong for the in-crowd in high school. New fall screening times! Doors open at 7:45, movie starts at 8pm. Candy/Soda $1. Suggested donation $5. Popcorn is free!

The Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema festival has been tremendous thus far! I have seen many terrific films, such as BEYOND THE CALL a painful, beautiful and inspiring documentary about three men’s selfless work on Earth’s front lines by Adrian Belic and THE VIOLIN, a short and demented treatise on the dangerous affects an instrument can have on your life by Bernal’s own Dean Mermell, who also wrote and performed an excellent piano soundtrack to the film. Dean is also in a rock opera currently in performance called EXIT SIGN and you can read about it here.

The BHOC finishes up this Sunday at Zeum at 7pm. Hopefully we will have some BHOC events at Four Star during the year in preview of the 6th festival next year.

It’s September! Which means so many things. The lovely warmest months of the year are upon us. School has started for many. And it’s my birthday month! (More on that next week). As it is a new month, that can only mean one thing at Four Star Video. A new edition of HIGHLIGHTED NEW ADDITIONS. This month, Rachel W. has brought into our collection a tremendous group of DVD’s that we have previously on had on VHS (HOUSEBOAT, TO CATCH A THIEF, MOVE OVER DARLING, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, BETTER OFF DEAD), as well as a great collection of new stuff; some docs (DARFUR DIARIES, 18 IN 08, CONFESSIONS OF A SUPERHERO), some comedy (BEST OF MAD TV SEASONS 8,9 AND 10, PIZZA, COMPLETE GIDGET COLLECTION, NEVER BEEN KISSED) and some other terrific stuff as well. Check it out!

This week there is a good stack of stuff, including season 4 of the USA version of the OFFICE which is pretty freaking funny, I must say. Also in this week is the dark rumination on married life called...uh...MARRIED LIFE.

I watched a new addition to the library last night called I’M A CYBORG, BUT IT’S OK, which was terrific! It is a Korean comedy by Chan-wook Park (OLD BOY, LADY VENGEANCE), super stylized, and with grand vision about a young woman who is hospitalized after deciding she is a robot and the young thief she meets in the hospital who helps her accept her fate. The movie is beautiful and weird and funny, and I highly recommend it. Wow!

Last note: Have you seen our new TV and Blu-ray player? Thanks a million to Tom, our neighbor and friend who helped us pick out our new toys and install them. Now we can play these so-called Blu-ray discs at the store and show you just how spectacular they look. After about an hour staring at them this morning, I can say they are better than advertised. PLANET EARTH on Blu-ray knocked my socks off.

Alrighty then, see you at the store.

Love and kisses,

Ken

PS. My band THE DONT’S is rocking the Red Devil Lounge on Thursday night, Sept 4th…
