****new release list no.291

And thus the completely non-understandable DVD release system strikes again! This week, you will not know what to watch first.

Will it be WINTER’S BONE? The dramatic independent film about a young woman trying to find her meth-cooking father in the Ozark backwoods before the state takes their property leaving her family homeless? Or will it be THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, the second in the uber-popular (and uber-violent) Stieg Larsson series about a very tripped out hacker, the journalist she somewhat loves (if she is capable of “love”) and the very psychotic crimes they are involved with solving. The books were nerve-wracking roller coasters that demand white-knuckle reading, and evidently, the movies do them justice. YOU DON’T KNOW JACK is HBO’s feature fictobiopic about the amazing Jack Kevorkian starring Al Pacino as the Doctor of Death. Then again, maybe you are more into lighter fare, such as SEX & THE CITY 2, the next big-screen chapter in the story of a group of aging hotties looking for love, usually in all the wrong places.

Tough choices, people.

Well, if the big fiction flicks aren’t your thing, there are a host of interesting docs to watch, such as Oliver Stone’s SOUTH OF THE BORDER and a pair of musical docs (WHO IS HARRY NILSSON and ROCKSTEADY: THE ROOTS OF REGGAE) and more (INFIDEL, THE BEST GOVERNMENT MONEY CAN’T BUY).

There is also some Criterion releases (PATHS OF GLORY, HOUSE), some interesting television (THE REAL L WORD: SEASON ONE, POLDARK: SERIES 2), good kids stuff and a Blu-ray release of the entire BACK TO THE FUTURE TRILOGY (whoa, it’s a 25th anniversary edition, that’s a little weird…).

I have been thinking about my responsibility in this blog regarding neighborhood news, especially when it comes to the sadder stuff. As much as I don’t want to be a downer, I also think it is important to pay respect to our neighbors, and sometimes, as a business owner, I hear about things that some people don’t hear about and would like to know.

In that light, I am very sorry to let you know about the passing of two important people in the fabric of Bernal Heights.

Sam McCann-Kingston died tragically in early October. I didn’t know him well, but as a parent, I was familiar with his very lovely spirit. I first met him when my son was born; he was an 8-year-old with a little brother that he obviously loved tremendously. Over the years, I watched him grow up from afar, and I was super impressed at what a calm and sweet young man he was becoming. I am very sorry to see you go, Sam. I wish your family peace and love.

This past Friday, Mauricio Vela passed on from an illness he had been dealing with. Anyone who knew Mauricio knew him to be a very strong presence who worked very hard within multiple political and social arenas to protect the rights of the under-represented. He had certain agendas, and was infallibly dogmatic within those agendas in working for his community. He had a tremendous love for his local sports teams and was a great lover of the arts and music of our city as well. He was a very big personality, and he will be missed tremendously.

I mentioned last month that another important person in Bernal Heights, Aaron Green, had passed. There is a memorial scheduled this coming Saturday, Oct 30th at 2pm in the neighborhood. Please email me if you’d like details.

On the flip side, welcome to the world, Oliver Felix Stephens and Cassius “Cash” Lucas! I can’t wait to meet you guys!

Alrighty, that’s all folks, hope to see you at the store.

Love and Kisses,
Ken

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE.****BD****
Action/Mystery/Foreign (Swedish).
Noomi Rapace/Michael Nyqvist/Lena Endre.
Directed by Daniel Alfredson.
* Ah Lisbeth Salander, you crazy freak! We would do just about anything not to get on your bad side… You were so lethal in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and now you are back in the middle installment of your suspenseful trilogy. What? This is just the second in the Swedish version of the trilogy and the American version is already being filmed? Wow, Lisbeth, we guess we should be happy, we’re all rather addicted to your strange nuanced behavior, and it is splendid to know we will get to know you further, and in two different languages. In the meantime, what is happening for you these days? Sex trafficking? Murder? What? You are implicated in these murders? Well, we know you have no problem murdering them that need murdering; which begs the question, did these guys need killing? Wait, don’t run away! Lisbeth! We love you!

HOUSE.
Criterion/Comedy/Fantasy/Horror/Sci-Fi/Bizarretitude/Foreign (Japanese).
Kimiko Ikegami.
Directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi.
* This description is from Criterion’s website: “How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie House (Hausu)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet.” Wow, sounds awesome.

It is now being re-released with the full bells and whistles of a Criterion release including interviews and new mastering.

PLAN B.
Drama/Foreign (Spanish).
Manuel Vignau/Lucas Ferraro.
Directed by Marco Berger.
* When Bruno (Vignau) is dumped by his girlfriend, he is thrown into turmoil. Anger, self-pity and revenge become his mantras. When she gets a new boyfriend, Pablo (Ferraro), he befriends him, hoping to figure out some plan that will cause her pain. Maybe he’ll hook him up with another woman, or maybe he will tell him about all her faults…OR, hmmmm, what else could he do with Pablo that would get back at his ex-girlfriend?

SEX & THE CITY 2.****BD****

WINTER’S BONE.****BD****
Drama/Mystery/Indie.
Jennifer Lawrence/John Hawkes.

* Garnishing a lot of early Academy award talk, Granik’s second feature film is about a 17-year-old, Ree Dolly (Lawrence,in a career-making role) living in the Ozark back woods, struggling to keep her siblings fed amidst an absent drug-cooking father and a withdrawn and depressed mother. When her father misses a court date, the local Sheriff shows up and tells young Ree that her house has been put up as collateral for his bail – if he is a no-show, the family will lose everything. Fueled by need, Ree goes on a hair-raising journey through the woods and through her family’s crystal meth operation, searching for either her father or any conclusive evidence of his demise. Despite messages and threats that would make a weaker person turn back, Ree dogmatically pursues the truth.

YES, VIRGINIA.
Drama.
Neil Patrick Harris/Beatrice Miller/Jennifer Love Hewitt/Alfred Molina.
Directed by Pete Circuitt.
* A Christmas story set in 1897 New York City about a young girl’s quest to find out if Santa Claus exists.

YOU DON’T KNOW JACK.
Fictobiopic.
Al Pacino/John Goodman/Susan Sarandon.
Directed by Barry Levinson.
* Jack Kevorkian is a renaissance man; he is an oil painter, a jazz musician and also, in his chosen profession as an M.D., the world’s foremost right-to-die activist. During the 1990’s, he created and utilized a machine that gave patients the ability to activate a drip system which intravenously ended their lives. He used this machine to help at least 130 people to die. He famously received the moniker Doctor Death from the media as a result. In 1998, after allowing a broadcasting of a videotape he made providing someone with life’s release using a lethal injection, he was arrested and charged with murder. He served 8 years after being convicted and was just released in 2008. This Emmy-award winning (and HBO-made) film depicts his life and his philosophy.

SOUTH OF THE BORDER.
Documentary/Politics.

Directed by Oliver Stone.
* From the production company: “There's a revolution underway in South America, but most of the world doesn't know it. In casual conversations with Presidents Hugo Chavez (Venezuela), Evo Morales (Bolivia), Lula da Silva (Brazil), Cristina Kirchner (Argentina), as well as her husband and ex-President Nestor Kirchner, Fernando Lugo (Paraguay), Rafael Correa (Ecuador), and Raul Castro (Cuba), Stone gains unprecedented access and sheds new light upon the exciting transformations in the region.”

He wrote many a hit song and worked with just about everyone. He also happened to own the flat in London that both Cass Elliot, from The Mamas and The Papas, and Keith Moon, from The Who, died in. ****new release list no.290

Anyone make it up to Fiesta on the Hill yesterday? It was rainy and cold, but surprisingly well attended. The music was terrific (great job, committee, but, wait, why didn’t my band play?), and if you were willing to brave the elements, there were some great deals to be had. I can’t wait for the next warm sunny Fiesta day, b/c I love our neighborhood street festival!

The biggest title we have this week is PREDATORS, the next edition of the multi-film saga about nasty humanoid critters that seem to give us such trouble. We also have a lot of interesting documentary’s this week (THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS, SMASH HIS CAMERA, OCEANS and THE CRIMSON WING: MYSTERY OF THE FLAMINGO), and much television as well (THE TRAILER PARK BOYS: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON, SHAUN THE SHEEP, WALLANDER, A MIND TO KILL: SERIES 2).

We also have bunches of newly released Blu-ray titles, such as APOCALYPSE NOW (including the amazing documentary HEARTS OF DARKNESS), THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW: 35th ANNIVERSARY EDITION, Baz Luhrmann’s ROMEO AND JULIET and MOULIN ROUGE, and Kurosawa’s SEVEN SAMURAI.

Hey all, don’t forget how fun it is to watch a movie outside! Especially with amazing heat lamps like they have down at El Rio. Tomorrow night (Tuesday, Oct 19th), Four Star Video hosting a movie night at El Rio at 3158 Mission Street next Tuesday, October 19th, starting at 6:30. Besides the extra special awesome fun you will have hanging out and watching SAY ANYTHING, you will also be helping raise a little cash for the Fairmount Elementary School PTA. We are suggesting a $5 donation to get in. Andrew Friedman (Four Star staff) will be showing a short film he just finished that he shot in Hong Kong during a break from his work as an undercover CIA agent (oops, did I just blow your cover, Andrew?) and J.H. Lucas, the singer of my band, The Dont’s, will be screening a trailer for his super funny feature film TWO GUYS AND A VAN. Please join us! We hope to see you there!

Recently I stumbled across this website, called Big Ass Message, that allows anyone to create a big ass message and send it out to the world on the internet. I tried it!

Alrighty then, see you down at the store.

Love and Kisses,
Ken

ps Oh snap, I forgot! My film column officially came out in the New Bernal Journal. Read it, and tell me what you think!

AGORA.
Action/Drama/Advenure.
Rachel Weisz/Max Minghella.
Directed by Alejandro Amenabar.
* Weisz plays Hypatia of Alexandria, a famous professor of philosophy in Roman Egypt whose slave falls in love with her in this historical drama.

THE LOST BOYS: THE THIRST.
Action/Vampire/Horror.
Cory Feldman/Tanit Phoenix.
Directed by Dario Piana.
* Part three in the saga about some Vampire hunters living and working in a sleepy beach town on the California coast…Evidently, this one is much better than part 2 was.

PLEASE GIVE.
Comedy.
Catherine Keener/Amanda Peet/Oliver Platt/Rebecca Hall.
Directed by Nicole Holofcener.
* This very New York comedy is about a couple (Keener, Platt) who buys and sells furniture who move into an apartment with an agreement that the elderly woman who previously owned it can live there for her remaining days…What they don’t count on is the tenant’s granddaughters (Peet, Hall) with whom they are in constant conflict.

PREDATORS (2010).****BD****
Action/Sci-fi/Horror.
Adrien Brody/Topher Grace/Alice Braga/Danny Trejo/Laurence Fishburne.
Directed by Nimrod Antal.
* This is technically number 3 in the PREDATOR series (but it would be number 5 if you count those two Alien vs Predator movies)… Again, it concerns amazing human warriors being hunted by (and hunting) really amazing alien warriors. I would make fun of this movie a bit, but the director’s name is Nimrod, and you don’t want to mess with someone named Nimrod. So anyway, watch this great action flick.

THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY LEFAY.
Comedy.
Tim Allen/Andie McDowell/Paz Vega/Lindsay Sloane/Jenna Elfman/Elisha Cuthbert.
Directed by Howard Michael Gould.
* When Henry goes missing and presumed dead, his daughter begins to prepare for his funeral only to be relentlessly bothered by his many ex-wives who come crawling out of the woodwork.

............//DOCUMENTARY/............

THE CRIMSON WING: MYSTERY OF THE FLAMINGO.****BD****
Documentary/Nature.
Directed by Matthew Aeberhard and Leander Ward.
* Filmed in Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania, this Disney Nature documentary tracks the life-cycle of the gorgeous Flamingo. We generally only see these birds at zoos, but this documentary shows them in their natural habitats living naturally amongst themselves in all their glorious wonder. On another note, I hear the word “crimson” and all I can think about is "Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James and The Shondells, though truthfully, everyone who did this song pretty much rocked it out of this world. And just cause I LOVE Tommy James, here is another one of his, Crystal Blue Persuasion, made into a video by filming a record player playing the original vinyl.

OCEANS.****BD****
Documentary/Nature.
Directed by Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud.
* This documentary shows up the beauty of our planets oceans while discussing the dramatic changes that have occurred under water reflecting human’s treatment of the sea.

SMASH HIS CAMERA.
Documentary/Art/HBO.
Marlon Brando/Ingrid Bergman/Clark Gable/Humphrey Bogart.
Directed by Leon Gast.
* This movie is about the life and work of Ron Galella, one of the world’s first and foremost paparazzi. Galella spent his time secretly (and frequently against their wishes) shooting photos of celebrity and tracking their lives. This HBO documentary is fascinating and very entertaining.

THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS: TIBET’S STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM.
Documentary/Politics.
The Dalai Lama.
Directed by Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam.
* From Amazon: A provocative and potent look at The Dalai Lama's ceaseless struggle for justice and recognition for the Tibetan people, The Sun Behind the Clouds focuses on the pivotal and particularly tumultuous events of 2008. From Buddhist monks' protests in Lhasa on the 50th anniversary of the Chinese invasion and the four-month march of exiled Tibetans through India to the Tibetan border, to the Beijing Olympics and the raucous talks between the Dalai Lama's representatives and the Chinese government, the film uncovers the growing rifts between younger Tibetans and their most respected spiritual leader.

While His Holiness advocates for political autonomy within China rather than secession from it, a younger generation within Tibet has grown impatient and begun to chart a more confrontational course. Following The Dalai Lama's political life with unprecedented personal access, Tibetan filmmaker Tenzing Sonam and co-director Ritu Sarin bring an impassioned focus to the myriad complexities in finding a peaceful solution based on compromise and dialogue.

............//TELEVISION/............

A MIND TO KILL: SERIES 2.
Television/Mystery.
Philip Madoc.
* DCI Noel Bain (Madoc) solves bloody and complicated cases working as a crime-solver in Wales.

SHAUN THE SHEEP: SEASON ONE.
Animation.
Shaun/Friends/Enemies.
* The creators of WALLACE & GROMIT bring us more zany adventures about Shaun a sheep who is no follower.

THE TRAILER PARK BOYS: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON.
Television/Comedy.
John Paul Tremblay/Robb Wells/John Dunsworth.
* I guess they got their licensing issues behind them, b/c the first season they released on DVD was Season Five and no they are starting from the beginning! This is great news for fans of this hilarious documentary-style TV show about a couple of petty felons living life in the trailer park.

WALLANDER.
Television/Mystery.
Kenneth Branagh
* This remake of the Swedish original stars Branagh as the Swedish Kommissar, Kurt Wallander. This collection is basically Season 2 (though it doesn’t say it) and consists of three hour long episodes. I read THE MAN WHO SMILED, and it was a terrific novel (thanks, Aaron!). The other two titles in this collection are FACELESS and THE FIFTH WOMAN.

............//FAMILY/............

ANGELINA BALLERINA: NUTCRACKER SWEET.

SESAME STREET: C IS FOR COOKIE MONSTER.
* That’s good enough for me.

............//NEW ON BLU/............

APOCALYPSE NOW.
* Includes the theatrical release, the “REDUX” version, and the amazing documentary HEARTS OF DARKNESS made by Coppola’s wife during the original filming.

MOULIN ROUGE.
* Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor are just two of the huge names in this Baz Luhrmann musical about the dangerous love triangle between a poet and courtesan and a duke.

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW: 35th ANNIVERSARY EDITION.
* I’ll remove the cause, but NOT the symptom!

ROMEO AND JULIET.
* Leo and Claire Danes starred in Baz Luhrmann’s rocking version of the classic Shakespeare tale.

SEVEN SAMURAI.
* Criterion’s latest Blu-ray release is Akira Kurasawa’s masterful 1954 tale about a village under attack who gather seven unemployed samurai to defend them.

****new release list no.289

As we all know, change is a good thing, even if it is sometimes scary and unwanted. If we don’t have change somewhat regularly in our lives we stagnate and that’s no good for anyone… This is what we are telling ourselves here at Four Star Video as we experience a staffing change that is sad. Yes, the assistant manager of Four Star, someone who has worked here for over three years and has come to define the experience of shopping here for many people has moved on. Chris first came in to interview with me in July of 2007. Jeff and Chris actually both interviewed with me that month…for one job that was open. They were both obviously so great that I didn’t want to pick just one, so I hired them both. Over time, Chris has helped us here in so many ways, working not just at Four Star but also at Succulence. He has been honest and loyal, totally dependable, and a pleasure to be around. Chris, I thank you so much for your time here and I wish you well for the future!

Please welcome Tanya, Shila’s little sister, who is taking his place. She has been lingering and loitering around the store for so many years, you probably thought she already worked here! We are excited to have her officially on board.

Four Star Video is proud to announce that we are having a movie night at one of our favorite local bars, El Rio at 3158 Mission Street next Tuesday, October 19th, starting at 6:30. This event will be a fundraiser for the Fairmount Elementary School PTA and will have a suggested donation of $5 to get in. We are excited to be showing SAY ANYTHING, starring John Cusack and Ione Skye, directed by Cameron Crowe. We will have some snacks on hand, and we suggest you make responsible use of El Rio’s magnificent bar. We will start the screening with several shorts and trailers, including the trailer for my bandmate J.H. Lucas’s feature film TWO GUYS AND A VAN and there is even a rumor we will be showing a short made by Four Star’s very own resident filmmaker, Andrew Friedman (right, Andrew? Right?). We hope to see you there!

Some big titles out this week include Tilda Swinton’s I AM LOVE, the tragic story of doomed love in turn of the century Milan, LEAVES OF GRASS, starring Edward Norton as twins battling a drug lord in rural Oklahoma, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, an animated adventure about a kid who is planning to be a dragon hunter before he makes friends with one, and JONAH HEX, an action flick starring John Malkovich and Josh Brolin about a bounty hunter trying to save the world from a mean terrorist.

Also, big time television out this week includes IN TREATMENT: SEASON TWO (finally!) and THE TUDORS: THE FINAL SEASON.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my old cat, Pate, who moved in with Chris a few years ago. She is a super loving 17-year-old sweetheart who is looking for a home for her twilight years…If anyone is interested in living with this being who is brimming with personality, please let me know…We would be happy to help support her with any health issues.

Hey last thing, a public proclamation of the deepest love, admiration and appreciation for my wife, Amy Shelf on this, the occasion of our 15th Wedding Anniversary! I have never stopped feeling lucky and deeply in love. Thanks, Amy, for being a great partner, with your eyes wide open. Thanks for enjoying the good times to their fullest, and putting up with the rough times with patience and trust. Thanks for helping me always remember that this is my life, right now, stressful or not, happening this very minute. You are a great and amazing person, and I will love you til my heart stops. I am looking forward to the next 150 years together.

Alrighty then, see you down at the store.

Love and Kisses,
Ken

****new release list no.288

Ah, Bernal, I’d love to join all your clubs, like the Bernal Heights Democratic Club to discuss politics, or the Bernal Heights History Project to pontificate about your glorious past. I’d love to attend all your community events, such as the semi-regular Bernal Economic Forums put on by the guys behind Bernal Bucks. I’d love to read all your blogs, and partake in all your culture, such as the Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema festival, which has its closing night tonight (Monday, October 4th) at El Rio, (you should check it out, the program looks awesome!) and Music on the Hill which actually has just moved last year to Diamond Heights but remains very Bernal-centric. I’d love to always attend Bernaling Man (secret roving wine party); I’d love to eat only Bernal Butter; have all my knives sharpened at Bernal Cutlery; do all my yoga at Bernal Yoga; stretch at fit Bernal fit; buy pet food at Bernal Beast and purchase all my medical marijuana at The Bernal Heights Collective(Smurfberry? What the heck is that???). Ah Bernal, how do I love thee? If only there were more time in the day, more days of the week…alas, as much as I take part in your special ways, I still must miss out on even more… But I know you are out there, with open arms, inviting me along to whatever adventures there may be. Thanks, Bernal.

I am not sure how the movie industry decides what to release, but this week I got about 20 million kids movies. Hey parents, do you still rent movies here? If so, this is a good week to come in. In the kids section, there is 15+ new movies including a new season of CHARLIE AND LOLA, bunches of holiday related films, and new Dr. Seuss, Charlie Brown, Phineas and Ferb and more! Even in the New Release section, there is lots of family oriented stuff, such as the 2010 remake of THE KARATE KID, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. In the updated version, the kid now lives in China, where the local bullies are making life miserable for him, until he meets Mr. Han, who teaches how to stick up for himself. Also out this week is THE SECRET OF KELLS, an Academy Award nominated animation film about a kid living in medieval times. Full of amazing art design and a magical story, it is about enlightenment triumphing over evil.

For the adult set, another remake is here, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Freddy Krueger is back in this tale about a demon killing people in their sleep. Yikes!

Three noteworthy television titles are here this week, COMMUNITY: SEASON ONE, about a eclectic community college, MODERN FAMILY: COMPLETE FIRST SEASON a mockumentary-style comedy about three families and CAPRICA: 1.0, the long-awaited for spinoff of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA about the humble beginnings of artificial intelligence.

Alrighty, that’s all folks, hope to see you at the store.
BHOC
Love and Kisses,
Ken

............//NEW RELEASES//............

30 DAYS OF NIGHT-DARK DAYS.
Horror.
Diora Baird/Mia Kirschner.
Directed by Ben Ketai.
* Stella survived the horrible massacre of her little isolated town in Alaska, but very few people believe her story of vampires and murder…However, she does meet a small group of survivors who are planning a revenge attack on the vampire population of Los Angeles. Stella joins them, and prepares to lose what little she still has to destroy the bloodsucking mother uckers (too many mother uckers, ucking with my shi!).

FADE TO BLACK.
Drama/Mystery/Noir.
Diego Luna/Danny Huston/Paz Vega/Christopher Walken.
Directed by Oliver Parker.
* Ah, the second fictional Orson Welles film to hit the shelves in the last couple months…In this one, Welles (Huston) has just broken up with Rita Hayworth and has traveled to Italy to try to put his life back together…Unfortunately, when an actor is murdered on his film set, he is pulled into all sorts of dark conspiratorial complications..

THE KARATE KID (2010).****BD****
Drama.
Jaden Smith/Jackie Chan.
Directed by Harald Zwart.
* Remake alert: Watch the original! It so rules. The new one? Not sure, but it stars the very cute child of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jaden. In this updated version, Dre (Smith) ends up living in China with his mom, who has brought them there for a job. Unfortunately: bullies! In fact, in a sure sign of something, the concept of bullying actually appears in the language of the PG rating this film received from the MPAA. If anyone out there has an in-depth understanding of the rating system, and would like to give a talk on it during business hours to the Four Star community, let me know; I think everyone would be interested. Where was I? Ah, yes, Dre is being bullied by the mean oppressive Chinese government, or rather, some Chinese kids and he meets Mr. Miyagi (in this case Mr. Han, played by Jackie Chan) who teaches how to kick some ass, which he then does. Probably, a sequel remake is in the works…

THE LAST RITES OF RANSOM PRIDE.
Western.
Lizzy Caplan/Peter Dinklage.
Directed by Tiller Russell.
* In this low budget Western, a woman is trying to bring her dead lover home to be buried. And just as importantly, Peter Dinklage’s official character name is: The Dwarf. That must really piss him off.

MID-AUGUST LAUNCH.
Comedy/Drama/Foreign (Italian).
Gianni Di Gregorio/Valeria De Franciscis.
Directed by Gianni Di Gregorio.
* A middle aged Italian man, living in Rome with his henpecking Mother struggles to define himself and spends an increasing amount of time daydreaming at the local pub. This film was pretty heavily decorated worldwide on the festival circuit.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (2010).****BD****
Horror.
Jackie Earle Haley.
Directed by Samuel Bayer.
* For a minute I thought this film was about the time I got pulled over by the cops on Elm Street the first day I had my driver’s license because I had my brights on by accident. Oh, that was such a nightmare! I got a ticket, and the cop was condescending and oppressive, and I almost cried! Then, I looked at the DVD box and saw that it was actually a remake of an 80’s film about other horrific experiences that also happened on Elm Street…Involving a very mean man who harms people terribly in their dreams resulting not in expensive therapy bills, but instead, death.

OXFORD MURDERS.
Suspense/Crime.
Elijah Wood/John Hurt.
Directed by Alex de la Iglesia.
* A university professor (Hurt) and a student at Oxford (Wood) try to solve a series of murders that somehow involve mathematic symbols. Which I completely understand, cuz I never feel quite as homicidal as when I see or hear about imaginary numbers.

THE SECRET OF KELLS.****BD****
Fantasy/Adventure/Animation/Family.
Brendan Gleeson/Evan McGuire.
Directed by Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey.
* This Academy-award nominated fantasy animation story is about Brendan, a child living in a medieval outpost that is under siege by barbarians. He meets an illustrator, who is working on a secret and powerful book, and is pulled into his adventure, traveling into a dark woods where mythical creatures live.

SPLICE.****BD****
Sci-Fi/Thriller/Suspense.
Adrien Brody/Sarah Polley/Delphine Chaneac.
Directed by Vincenzo Natali.
* Elsa and Clive (Polley and Brody) are two scientists who throw caution to the wind when the create Dren (Chaneac) a critter formed when they splice human and non-human DNA together to form something altogether new.

YOGA.
Horror/Foreign (Korean).
Su-yeon Cha/Daniel Choi.
Directed by Jae-yeon Yun.
* There will be super duper serious consequences if you don’t follow your yoga teacher’s rules! And we are not talking about a pulled hamstring, or sore shoulder muscles.

............//DOCUMENTARY/............

BASEBALL: THE TENTH INNING.
Documentary/Sports.
Directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.
* This is an addendum to Burns previously released miniseries epic: BASEBALL. From Amazon.com’s product description: 1992 - 2009: As the tumultuous twentieth century is drawing to a close, and a new millennium begins, baseball continues to reflect the complicated country that created it. In an age of globalization and speculation, the players and the owners wage a cataclysmic battle over money and power; dazzlingly talented Latin and Asian stars transform the game; Cal Ripken becomes the game's new Iron Man; sluggers Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds do things that have never been done before; the Yankees build a dynasty while their arch rivals, the Red Sox, stage the greatest comeback in history. And in September of 2001, at a time when America seems most threatened, baseball offers the hope that things will one day return to normal. The national pastime is more popular, and more profitable, than ever, but suspicions and revelations about performance enhancing drugs keep surfacing, threatening the integrity of the game itself. Still, through it all, baseball endures, a game of infinite possibility and surpassing beauty.

THE OATH.
Documentary/International Intrigue.
Salim Hamdan/Abu Jandal.
Directed by Laura Poitras.
* This intense documentary tells the story of two men, Salim Hamdan and Abu Jandal, who were Osama Bin Laden’s bodyguard and personal driver and whose fates diverged dramatically post-911. Won Best Documentary Cinematography at the 2010 Sundance Festival and was nominated for its Grand Jury Award.

............//TELEVISION/............

COMMUNITY: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON.
Television/Comedy.
Joel McHale/Chevy Chase/Gillian Jacobs.
Created by Dan Harmon
* A community college with its tripped out staff and freaky students is the setting in this NBC comedy about a lawyer who is forced to go back to school. Somehow this comedy has an 8.8 (out of 10) rating on IMDB. That is very amazing.

CAPRICA-SEASON 1.0.
Television/Sci-Fi.
Alessandra Torresani/Eric Stoltz/Magda Apanowicz.
* The BATTLESTAR GALACTICA spinoff has finally made it to the video store. In this sci-fi series, the action takes place 50 years before its predecessor, on the peaceful planet of Caprica, where two families deal with the far-reaching consequences of a huge scientific breakthrough.

MODERN FAMILY: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON.
Television/Comedy.
Ed O’Neill/Sophia Vergara/Julie Bowen.
Created by Christopher Lloyd (not that Christopher Lloyd) and Steven Levitan.
* Done in the same mockumentary style as THE OFFICE and PARKS AND RECREATION, this Fox comedy is about three families and their very humorous struggles to fit into to reality. This was on in the store a lot this last week and has been cracking everybody up.
